One has never had formal education, and the other is a Ph D. Like they say, art is a great leveler.
Lakshana Art Gallery is organising an exhibition of paintings by K Y Das and Dr B Prasanna Rao from 9th to 13th January. Keloth Yogi Das was born in 1959 in North Malabar District of Kerala. Due to the frequent transfers of his father, he could not complete his formal education, but his wanderings across the country broadened his vision and deepened his sensitivity.
As a teenager he dabbled in poetry, studied Theyyam, gave performances in Bharatanatyam and experimented with painting. He had no fascination for a formal training in art. His wanderings came to a stop when he joined CCMB (Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology) in Hyderabad. This temple of science, which also encourages art and artists, gave him a chance to observe the work of different artists.
9 years ago, a sculptor camp at CCMB inspired Das, and today he has 4 beautiful stone carvings spread all over the campus of CCMB adding beauty to it.
A poet-dancer-painter-sculptor-martial-artist unified into one person is Das. None of his creations have titles. He leaves it to the onlookers to appreciate the meaning in it in their own language. Most of his creations have multiple figures in one, as though every form in nature has its complimentary form. He has exhibited his works at the CSIR Complex, New Delhi, in addition to at various venues in Hyderabad like CCMB, Shilparamam, Noma Garden, Salarjung Museum and ICCR Art Gallery.
Dr Prasanna Rao Bandela was born 1938 in Vijayawada. He holds a Doctorate in Psychology and a Bachelor's degree in Law. As a scholar, he visited the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, in 1977. He has been painting since his high school days, and has participated in various exhibitions across India. This is his first solo exhibition.
He served several organizations in various capacities, such as the Defence Research and Development Organization (New Delhi), the National Institute of Small Industry Extension Training (Hyderabad), Bharat Earth Movers (Bangalore), Andhra Bank (Hyderabad) and the Banking Service Recruitment Board (Hyderabad).
During his working days as a Psychologist on 33 Services Selection Board, Jabalpur, he investigated creative behavior and its relation to cognitive styles such as Field Independence, Category Width and Complexity. For this research work he was awarded a Ph D by the University of Jabalpur. He is also an avid coin collector.
As a consultant he handled several management assignments and published articles in professional journals and national dailies. After his retirement from service, he is now fully engaged in writing and painting. He has published two books - Born To Be Happy: Enjoy Life To The Full and Coin Splendor: A Journey Into The Past - and has two books yet to be released - Joy Of Living and On Success And Happiness: 1000+ Inspiring Quotes.
