REVIEW FOR NATIONAL SUB-JUNIOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS
This week, Hussain Sagar is going to be much more fun to look at. So much that in all probability you'll want your kid to be in it next year.
The Rowing Association Of India is organising the 10th National Sub-Junior and 12th Sprint Challenger Rowing Championships from 4th to 10th June, at the Hussain Sagar lake. About 400 rowers from 17 different states will take part in these championships.
The sub-junior nationals aim at grooming youngsters for higher age groups and levels of competitions. The challenger category is only for boys who haven't won any medal in the nationals, right through their careers. It provides them a level field in the absence of elite rowers. A podium finish in this event get a rower into the elite category in which he will be able to compete with competitive rowers and make it to the Indian team.
12 rowers in the sub-junior and 15 rowers in the challenger championships, including two girls, are participating from Andhra Pradesh. In the girls section, Swapna and Meghana will participate only in the singles and the doubles events. Boys are expected to participate in all the events.
In the sub-junior boys category, Ajay & Hari, and Motilal and Vikram will take part in the coxless pairs, while Ajay, Hari, Prasad & Teja will feature in the coxless fours. In the challenger championships, Lokesh Sharma will compete in the single scull event, Sashi and Dangy will contest in the doubles scull event, and Alok Jena, Ajay Singh, Prakash & Pratap will compete in the coxless fours.
The state is expected to face stiff challenge from the rowers of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Delhi. As all the participants from the state are 9th or 10th standard school students, they get to train only during vacations. So, it has been difficult for them to perform without much training.
