Long and lustrous tresses have inspired many a poet, smitten many men and made
legends out of mere women. Remember the famous Sadhana cut, that cute little fringe
of hair on her forehead, which set a trend that survives to this day? And Meena
Kumari in Pakeezah, her dense long hair that had men swooning, and the gorgeous
Dimple in the Godrej advertisement, the soft brown and playful locks that will
always remain the original Miss Crowning Glory?
There is something about a woman with long hair that's both attractive and sensual.
And with this in mind, the Millenium Welfare Society, a social welfare group,
decided to help revive this crowning glory of femininity by hosting the 'Miss
Crowning Glory Contest of Andhra Pradesh'.
But it turned out to be a hair-raising experience for all that attended. The show
was totally disorganized and unprofessional. Things went horribly wrong from the
very start, the esteemed chief guests never arrived, the compere had no clue about
hosting a show, and to make matters worse, the young men in the crowd were crude
and boisterous. The bright side of the show was that one got a chance to witness
the long and beautiful tresses of the participants in all their glory. Then began
the dance competition, which was good initially, but turned monotonous and eventually
aggravating when the time limit of five minutes was abused.
Another downside was that the debate competition that was supposed to be held
at the beginning of the show was postponed to almost the end. When it eventually
happened, the first participant was so booed and ragged by the ignorant crowd
that the poor girl burst into tears, and after this the rest of the participants
refused to take part and walked out. A wise decision indeed. To cast pearls before
swine is pointless.
The show that was supposed to end at nine ended only at half past ten. The prize
distribution was hilarious, with most of the crowns made out of paper snapping
when placed on the winners heads, and it taking the management a whole five minutes
to get the sashes on right!
This was a show that most that attended will never forget, for it was a comedy
of errors that left its scars. For those interested in some factual data, the
winners of the Miss Crowning Glory Contest were Vanitha Rupani (Under 15), Santoshi
(15 to 25 years) and Sandhya Chawla (25 years and above). The winners in the dance
competition were Nicy (Under 15) and Geetha (15 and above), and in the group dance
the winners were Neethi Babani and Geetha. Special prizes where given to Manisha
(Miss Crowning Glory) and Shabana and Farheen (Dance Competition).
