For those of who enjoy going beyond the black and white dissection of history with enough windows open to the shades of gray, Saturday's play promises to be a treat. Pradeep Dalvi's Marathi play, Mee Nathuram Godse Boltoi, stirred up quite a controversy when it first showed in Mumbai, but since then it has gone on to deserve every bit of the attention lavished on it, with the help of a strong script and an intelligent moral intuition.
The play doesn't condone the killing of the Mahatma, instead it allows us a peek into the forces that shaped his assassin's character and political convictions. The story paints the portrait of a man, who was very patriotic in his own way and extremely disturbed at what he believed was the disaster of the Partition.
Main Nathuram Godse is the Hindi interpretation of the play, and will take us through the very same stations of the journey. It reveals little-known facts of Indian history, and promises to provide more than enough food for thought.
