He is considered one of the first great "auteurs", and was a cinematic master whose distinctive style always contained a concern for human issues and a reverence for natural beauty. In 1975, he was awarded an honorary Academy Award for his lifetime contribution to cinema. In 1977, the French government inducted him as an officer of the Legion of Honor. He is Jean Renoir, one of the most famous of French filmmakers. And the Alliance Francaise de Hyderabad is organizing a four-day French film festival in tribute.

Jean Renoir was born in Paris in 1894, and spent much of his childhood in the south of France. As the son of impressionist painter Auguste Renoir, he was immersed in the art world throughout his youth and acquired a keen appreciation for nature - one of the hallmarks of his father's works. In 1913, following his studies at University Aix-en-Provence, Renoir joined the army. He served as a cavalryman in the Alpine Infantry, and as a pilot in World War I, reaching the rank of full lieutenant before being discharged due to an injury.

In 1920, following his father's death, Jean Renoir married the painter's model Andrée Heuchling, later known as actress Catherine Hessling. Renoir was a ceramicist at the time, but he used his inheritance to create a production company and produce movies featuring his wife. Une Vie Sans Joie/Catherine, directed by Albert Dieudonné, was the first film Renoir financed. Renoir made his directorial debut with La Fille de l'Eau in 1925, and followed it with Nana in 1926. And most of the rest of his films get him his rightful place among the legends of French cinema.

Renoir died in California in 1979. And in his honor, five films directed by him will be screened at the Hari Hara Kala Bhavan:

1. The River
2. La Nuit du Carrefour
3. Toni
4. La Grande Illusion
5. French Cancan
