A group of 11 artists is in town from Kolkata. There's only one way to send them back. Rich, or at least happy. Catch their works on display at Chitramayee, and making them glow in recognition will be a natural byproduct.

Contrivance, a group of 11 artists from Kolkata, are exhibiting their paintings, sculpture and graphics, from 15th to 20th March, at the Chitramayee - State Gallery of Fine Arts. The exhibits contain paintings with watercolors, oil paints, acrylic colors and mixed media, graphics in mixed media, and sculpture in metal, fibre glass, terracota and mixed media. The profiles of the artists are as under:

Ajay Das is a painter, who paints with water colors and oil paints. He likes painting nature, particularly trees. He is an alumnus of the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata.

Animesh Biswar likes figurative paintings, his favourite medium being oil paints and acrylic on canvas. He is a self-taught artist.

Arun Jana is an artist, an alumnus of Rabindra Bharathi University, Kolkata. His paintings are all figurative, particularly featuring beautiful women, done with the media of oil and acrylic paints on canvas.

Bikas Mukherjee is a graphic artist, and his works are mostly prints and mixed media graphics. He has done a diploma in graphics from the Government College Of Art And Craft, Kolkata.

Dipankar Mukherjee's paintings are realistic, and he has chosen the medium of acrylic paints and mixed media. He is a self-taught artist.

Mohi Paul is an alumnus of the Government College Of Art And Craft, Kolkata. He is a painter and likes painting landscapes. His favorite media are acrylic and oil paints.

Nirmal Mallick is a sculptor, who has a diploma in sculpture from the Government College Of Art And Craft, Kolkata. His works are metal and mixed media sculpture.

Pradip Sur is a sculptor, who likes experimenting in various media. Here, his works are mostly in mixed media, terracota and fibre glass. He is an alumnus of the Government College Of Art And Craft, Kolkata.

Somnath Chakraborty is another sculptor with a liking for different media. His collections are made from mixed media, metal and terracota. He has done his diploma in sculpture from the Government College Of Art And Craft, Kolkata.

Swapan Denra is a collage artist, who juggles between various media. He is an alumnus of the Rabindra Bharathi University, Kolkata.

Uday Shankar Hajra does abstract paintings, mainly on canvas with acrylic colors. He is a self-taught artist.

Contrivance is a group set up by a handful of artists from Kolkata, back in 1979. Although the concept of 'a group of artists' is passe these days, Contrivance has been able to survive for more than a quarter century and is still strong. The members are from different ages and from different eras. There is hardly any common thread running among the works of the individual artists in the group - their works are distinct.
