Andhra's neighbours come visitng at YMCA this month, with hordes of charming knick-knacks and trinkets for you to pick and choose from. These artisans from the land of Puri and the Sun Temple are bound to be mighty talented, as you will see in the applique work from Pipli, Khallikote, Parlakhemundi and Boudh. You get everything from umbrellas to handbags and letter-holders in these distinctively bold, colorful patterns. Prices range from Rs. 20 to Rs. 500.
Handloom saris and dress material from Sambhalpur come in the Rs. 300 - Rs.1,000 range. Pattachitri - palm leaf painting is available at this exhibition, and what's more, there are 12 craftsman who will be demonstrating the creating of most of the handicrafts live. Golden Grass work, which is painting on leaves, can be bought for Rs. 40 to Rs. 200. Then there is Coconut Coir work, the simplicity and earthiness of which you will love.
Silver filigree is arguably Orissa's most well-known contribution to the world of handicrafts. Here, you will find everything from anklets, necklaces, rings and decorative articles, all in the most delicate filigree. Tussar silks are also available.
