A self taught-artist, Vijay Bhai Kochar is holding an exhibition where he is expressing his innermost feelings through the virtual medium - for, these are computer-generated images!
In the early 50s, an artist by the name Sudhir Khastagir encouraged Vijay Bhai Kochar to join Kalabhavan (Shanti Niketan) to learn visual art. While at Shanti Niketan from 1951 to 1957, first as a student of BA and then of MA and later as a teacher, he was closely associated with the Kalabhavan. He worked under renowned artist Ramkinker Baij and did many paintings and sculptures around that time. He researched and taught at five different universities including the Johns Hopkins University and the Howard University, USA. He finally shifted to Hyderabad from the Benaras Hindu University in 1980.
An artist who indulged in computers, he learnt graphics related to art and design on his own. Using the virtual medium to comprehend his creative potential, he studied the various tools and effects to combat a multitude of problems and seek their solutions. Between 1990 and 1994, he explored various possibilities in MS Paint and WordArt. After his retirement in 1994, he concentrated solely on creating simple compositions. Now he works with a variety of software including Coral, Photopaint, Paint Shop Pro, Illustrator and Photoshop.
He made further sustained and serious effort to explore the creative possibilities of the digital medium during 1998, and 70 of these works are being exhibited now. This is his first formal solo exhibition, and will be on for 5 days.
