Kalasagaram is starting its 39th annual festival today. Obviously, today's performer is special.
Kalasagaram, on the occasion of its 39th Annual Cultural Festival Of Music, Dance And Drama from 24th November to 3rd December, is organising a carnatic vocal recital by Nithyasree Mahadevan today, the inaugural day, at Bhagyalakshmi Kalabhavan in the Keyes Girls High School. Nithyasree will be supported by M A Krishnaswamy on the violin, Neyveli Skandasubrahmanyam on the violin and P V Ramanamurthy on the ghatam.
Mahadevan is the granddaughter of the legendary D K Pattammal and mridangam maestro Palghat Mani Iyer. She initially trained under her mother Lalitha Sivakumar, and later on with D K Pattammal. She has been performing since 1987, and is currently an A-grade artiste of the AIR. She has received many awards, notably Yuva Kala Bharathi, Sangeetha Sikhamani, Ugadi Puraskar, Nadabhushanam and Kalaimamani.
Enriched with a rich voice and a wide repertoire, Mahadevan is one of the most sought-after and top ranking artistes of the country, having performed at all major sabhas in India and also toured USA, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Geneva, Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi for concerts. She has rendered her voice to various movies and TV serials, apart from more than 100 CDs and cassettes.
Kalasagaram is a South-Indian cultural association situated in the East Nehru Nagar of East Marredpally, and has been organising Carnatic music concerts for more than 35 years. The concerts are always held in the Keyes High School campus in the open-air theater. The singers are generally from outside Hyderabad, usually amateurs and upcoming artistes, and are quite competent. Kalasagaram also occasionally stages South-Indian classical dances and Tamil plays.
