Kathak Kalakshetra is celebrating the birth anniversary of Saint Kabir Das with bhajans and recitals of poems, on 5th June, at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika. Some amateur singers like Malleshwar Rao, Ruknuddin, Suresh Babu, Madhusudan and Gnaneshwar will sing bhajans written by the legendary Saint Kabir Das. Dr C Narayana Reddy, who has used many of the saint's poems in his ghazals, will be the chief guest and will recite a few poems of Kabir Das.
Kabir Das was a great saint of the 15th century. Nothing is known about is his parents and his birth, but it is believed at he was born in 1440, near Varanasi. He grew up in a Muslim weaver family, but some say he was really the son of a Brahmin widow, and was adopted by a Muslim childless couple. He had written a number of poems/dohas that were later translated into English by Rabindranath Tagore, thus letting the world know of the seer. His poems were appreciated even by British and American authors.
Kathak Kala Kshetra was started by Pandit Anju Babu, a Kathak dancer, choreographer and percussionist, in 1980. He himself was a popular dancer, having performed in countries like the USA, France, England and Japan. Pandit Babu teaches many students in this institute, and has even conducted international training programs with Anjali Papa, Director of the Anjali Centre of Houston, where he trained many Indian and American children in Kathak.
