As part of its monthly staging of Telugu plays, Rasaranjani is organising Bheeshma, a mythological play on the legendary character of the Mahabharata, on 20th and 21st May, at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. The play is written by Lakshmi Kulashekhar and is being presented by Pallavi Arts, Proddutur.
The play starts with Bheeshma ruling the state of Hastinapura. Known as Devavrata by birth, he came to be called Bheeshma after he took an oath never to marry in his life. After the blind Dhritarashtra takes over the throne, Bheeshma became his advisor. His life was filled with sacrifices, including one in which he spurns the love of Amba (a princess), who performs penances to cause his death in her next birth. Accordingly, he gets killed in the battle of Mahabharata. He is remembered not only for his supreme sacrifices, but also for his bravery and valour.
Rasaranjini was established in March 1993, with a staging of the famous play Kanya Sulkam. During these 14 years since its inception, it has staged about 1,900 plays. It stages a play every month at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, to promote this neglected form.
The association not only stages its own productions, it also gets groups from outside and pays for their staging. It also trains in acting and mime. K V Ramana, IAS, is its president. Most of the members are renowned theater personalities.
The entry to the play is by tickets of Rs. 10 only, available at the venue. Please contact D Someshwara Rao at 94401-42266 for further details.
