The navaratris start today, and there are few better places to be or experiences to be had in town.
Shilparamam, as part of the Devi Navaratri celebrations, is organising a Bharatanatyam recital by Sharmila Taneja, on 23rd September.
The performance, themed as a 'Dance Of The Seasons', puts together items which comprise the festivals of a term. Sharmila will start her performance with a Vaatapi Ganapathim in Hamsadhwani Raagam and Adi Taalam - a prayer to Lord Ganesha seeking his blessings for the success of the program. It is also performed in remembrance of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Next to follow is Krishna Neebegane Baro, a padam in Yemen Kalyani raagam in Misra Chapu taalam, depicting Lord Krishna's wonderous childhood, his beauty and his mother's love for him. This is in reference to Janamashtami, which was on the 16th of August. Thillana in Kanada raagam and Tisram taalam is pure dance and rhythm full of happiness, apt to be performed on the first day of the Navaratris.
Finally, Brochevaru - a padam in Kamas raagam and Adi taalam, is dedicated to Lord Rama. This is a devotee's request to the Lord not to forsake his devotee, with a reference to Dussera and Diwali, the forthcoming festivals of this season, which celebrate Lord Rama's greatness.
The orchestra for the evening comprises Guru Hemamalini Arni, vocal by Sweta Prasad, Nattuvanar by Raghunandan, mridangam by Bhanu Prasad, flute by Dattatreya and percussion by V Sridhar.
Sharmila Taneja has been a disciple of Guru Hemamalini Arni for the last 15 years. She had her arangetram in 1995, and since then has given several performances and gained excellent reviews. She has performed for the Department of Culture (Andhra Pradesh), South Indian Cultural Association (SICA), Kalasagaram, the Birla Mandir, Dr Deepak Chopra in Goa (the French Ambassador), at all her Guru's annual dance ballets and many more places, and has received appreciation for her performances in leading newspapers and magazines.
