Nanni Moretti plays the father in a well-to-do provincial family, who is a psychiatrist tired of dealing with his patients’ collective boredom. His wife (Laura Morante) works in an art gallery by day and still finds time to bake cakes for her two children. His son, Andrea (Giuseppe Sanfelice), is a schoolboy with a taste for practical jokes and a curious losing streak in school tennis games. His daughter Irene (Jasmine Trinca), who is an A student, pores over obscure Latin texts with a pot-smoking boyfriend her father has his doubts about.
After a tragic incident, the close-knit family tries to cope with the extra space that’s opened up around the kitchen table.
As the title suggests, this is a film about private spaces, places of contemplation where one can break down or hide (secrets) from the world, be they bedrooms, changing rooms, or the shrink’s office. Cracks start appearing in the public arenas where the protagonists try to share their grief, and it is only by letting an outsider into their private spaces, that the family gets back to some kind of normalcy.
The Son's Room is 95 minutes long, and was directed by Nanni Moretti, who stars in the film along with Laura Morante and Jasmine Trinca.
The film will be screened at Sri Sarathi Studios on 25th October, at 6:30pm.
