ITC Limited, in association with the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, is organising the annual ITC Sangeet Sammelan as a tribute to the legendary Hindustani vocalist late Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, on 2nd and 3rd November, at the Ravindra Bharathi. Some of the country's best musicians, such as vocalist Vijaya Jadhav Gatlewar, and sitarists Debu & Prateek Chaudhuri, will perform on the first day, and vocalist Ulhas Kashalkar, and Mohan Veena specialists Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Salil Bhatt, will peform on the second day.
Tonite, Hindustani vocalist Vijaya Jadhav Gatlewar will present some contemporary ragas. A G Bandopadhyay on the tabla and Jyoti Goho on the harmonium will provide the instrumental support.
Gatlewar was initiated into taleem by her father Dinkar V Jadhav, a veteran exponent of the Atrauli-Jaipur gharana. In 1978, Gatlewar took a significant step in moulding her skills into refined classical art by becoming a pupil of Pandit Nivruttibuva Sarnaik at the ITC-sponsored Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta.
As an SRA scholar, she followed a rigorous training routine for over 15 years, listening to and thinking about music to the exclusion of almost everything else. Even as a teenager, Gatlewar's innate talent was evident. She won numerous competitions hosted by prestigious cultural institutions in and around Mumbai.
Her guru Pandit Nivruttibuva himself had the benefit of guidance from eminent maestros Rajab Ali Khan and Alladiya Khan, and evolved a style much influenced by Alladiya Khan's vocalism. From this proud lineage springs Gatlewar's awareness of what is most subtle and beautiful in the pure classicism of the Jaipur idiom.
In creating ITC-SRA in 1977, ITC's farsighted endeavor was to establish a modern Gurukul, and revive the traditional Guru-Sishya Parampara. It has played a major role in reviving and nurturing India's rich heritage of Hindustani classical music by organising concerts worldwide and undertaking research work.
