The Alliance Francaise de Hyderabad, in association with ITC Kakatiya Sheraton and the French Embassy in India, is presenting Fête de la Musique ("The Music Day Celebrations") with The French Kiss Tour by Emily Loizeau, on 24th June, at the hotel ITC Kakatiya Sheraton. The first part of the concert will be by the Hyderabad-based Word Of Mouth, and it will be followed by Emily Loizeau and troupe.
Also known as the World Music Festival, the Fête de la Musique is a festival that promotes music irrespective of genres in an effort to make it accessible to the general public. Launched in France in 1982, the Fête de la Musique is held every year on the Summer Solstice Day, the 21st of June.
It has since spread to various parts of the globe including countries as diverse as Belgium, Britain, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, China, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco and Pakistan, where it is celebrated as a mark of solidarity to the essential spirit of music bringing together humankind.
For the Indian musical lovers this year, the Fête de la Musique becomes the axis for a 9-city musical expedition that showcases a new generation of French artists that create music which veers into various diverse genres such as rock, hip-hop and jazz. To kickstart this new French singing, three artists representative of the creativity of this new French music, Emily Loizeau, Mademoiselle K and Anaïs, have been selected and brought together for a tour in the cultural network (represented by the Alliance Françaises) in India.
Collectively christened The French Kiss Tour, the events will see all the three groups perform in Bangalore, Bombay and New Delhi, following which they will perform separately in Calcutta, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Pondichery, Pune and Trivandrum. Emily Loizeau is the one selected to perform in Hyderabad.
Emily Loizeau began to learn piano when she was 5, and after studying classical music for many years, she dedicated three years to theater, assisting composer and stage manager Georges Aperghis among other things. "L'Autre Bout du Monde" is Emily Loizeau's debut album, and was released in March 2006 on the Paris-based independent label Fargo (Neal Casal, Andrew Bird, Jesse Sykes...).
Born in France to a British mother, Emily has expectedly had her music influenced as much by the French chanson (Jeanne Moreau, Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Legrand) as by American singer-songwriters and icons like Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Randy Newman. Naturally, Emily Loizeau writes and sings in English.
The members of the group include Emily Loizeau with the vocals and piano, Koudouno Olivier on the cello, Aveque Cyril on the drums and Le Roux Enora on the consoles, with the sound by Bourdon Hervé and lights by Mangin Matthieu.
Word Of Mouth is a Hyderabad-based jazz-rock trio. The band comprises of Arjun Chandran on the guitar, Karthik Kalyan on the drums and Varun Venugopal on the bass guitar, all musicians well-versed in the styles of jazz and funk, who have performed in various musical idioms and scenarios. Since its inception in early 2006, the band has performed shows that have been well received in spite of the city's indifference towards niche musical styles.
The entry is by invitations only. Please contact Alliance Francaise Of Hyderabad at 2770-0734/2770-0736 for further details.
