These guys may not have invented the tabla, but they sure are doing the 2nd half - reinventing it. But today they're getting vocal - it has to be, since they have SICA for partners.
The Percussive Arts Center, Bangalore, was founded in 1981 with the twin objectives of (a) perpetuating the memory of mridangam maestro Palghat T S Mani Iyer, and (b) promoting the dissemination of the finer aspects of the percussion art among scholars and laymen as well.
Ever since the organization's inception, it has been organizing the percussion arts festival as also conferences like Talavadhyostav as annual features. Under its program of inter-state cultural exchange, this year the organization is arranging a vocal concert, jointly with the South Indian Cultural Association, by Ganakalasri M S Sheela.
Nalini Mohan on the violin, Gautam Sriram on the mridangam and M A Krishna Murthy on the ghatam will support Sheela. Please contact K Venkataram, Percussion Arts Centre, Bangalore, at 080-656-3079 or Chakrapani at 761-4374 for further details.
