When in perfect sync and harmony on stage, Shamsundar and Jayalakshmi appear like they were made for each other. And indeed, they are!
To commemorate the 93rd birth anniversary of Sangeeta Ksheerasagara Uppalapati Ankaiah, Sangeeta Ksheerasagaram, in association with Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, is organising musical concerts in his honor from 12th to 18th March, at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha in Chikkadpally.
Today, Ayyagari Shamsundar and Ayyagari Jayalakshmi Shamsundar will present a veena duet recital. Providing support for them is Mullapudi Srirama Murthy on the mridangam. On this occasion, Veenavadya Vidya Visharada Ayyagari Shamsundar and Ayyagari Jayalakshmi Shamsundar, and Mridanga Ratna Mullapudi Srirama Murthy will be felicitated.
Ayyagari Shamsundar was born in 1948, and belongs to the music family of Vizianagaram. His father Ayyagari Someshwara Rao was also a veena vidhwan and his mother was the sister of another veena vidhwan, Pappu Someshwara Rao. Shamsunder's wife Jayalakshmi Shamsundar was the daughter of Pappu Someshwara Rao, and so the talent came naturally to the husband-wife duo.
Both Ayyagari Shamsundar and Ayyagari Jayalakshmi Shamsundar were the disciples of their fathers, Ayyagari Someshwara Rao and Pappu Someshwara Rao respectively. Shamsundar has accompanied his father to many concerts in India and abroad. He has completed his diploma in vocal and veena from Andhra University. He has been an A graded artiste of the All-India Radio for the last 30 years.
He was adjudged the Best Veena Artiste of 1978 by the Madras Academy and of 1979 by the Krishna Gana Sabha. He also received the National Award for the music ballet Nadabandham. He served as a lecturer in various music colleges of Andhra Pradesh for 17 years, and retired as principal of the Ghantasala Music College, Vijayawada, last year. He has more than 200 disciples.
Sangeeta Ksheerasagaram has been organizing classical music shows in memory of Late Uppalapati Ankaiah. As a tribute to the legend, it promotes upcoming and established artists by inviting them to perform in these concerts.
