Contemporary folk-fusion band from Bangalore, Swarathma, will be performing live on 27th January at the Hard Rock Cafe. The band is represented by Vasu Dixit on the vocals and rhythm guitars, Jishnu on the backing vocals and bass, Montry on the drums, Sanjeev on the violin, Pavan on the percussion and backing vocals, and Varun on the lead guitar and backing vocals.
Formed in 2002 in Mysore, Swarathma represents the sound of today's India - rooted in tradition, yet with sights set firmly on the world. The sound is Indian folk and classical with a Reggae, Blues and Jazz blend. The band is known for a visually interactive stage-act featuring faux folk-horses and 'Nehru topis'. This act won over audiences at top festivals such as Lovebox and Larmer Tree Festivals in London, and Awtar Festival in Morocco. They have travelled to Hong Kong and Singapore as well.
Swarathma released 2 albums on EMI in 2009, and have worked with the legendary John Leckie (Raidohead, Muse). They swept the Jack Daniels Indian Rock Awards 2009 winning the awards for the band, song and album of the year. Their first music video 'Pyaasi' was launched in May 2010. Funded by the Gibson Foundation and the Global Water Challenge, it speaks of the fragility of water told through a story of contrasts. It features the voice of legendary Indian classical singer Shubha Mudgal who collaborated with Swarathma on the track.
