"When you're Red you're Red all the way / From your first party purge to your last power play," goes a song infamously and forcibly credited to Mao. That was long back, but plays are still mostly credited to politicians. Here, then, is a change for the better.
The Andhra Pradesh State Film Television (APSFT) and the Theater Development Corporation Limited (TDCl) are organizing the 4th Annual State Nandi Natakotsavam Awards function on June 4.
This year, 51 padyanatakams (the traditional verse-based theater), 42 short length and 12 full-length social drama entries were received for the competition. Of these, 10 padyanatakams, 12 short length and 6 full-length plays were chosen between April 25 and May 15 by a team of judges, and will be staged continuously for 8 days, starting May 28, 2002. On each day, four plays from different categories will be staged.
The first prize for a padyanatakam will be a golden Nandi and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, and the second will win a silver Nandi and Rs. 20,000. The best social full-length play will get a golden Nandi and a cash award of Rs. 20,000 and the second best will be given a silver Nandi and Rs. 15,000. And the best short length play will get a golden Nandi and Rs. 15,000, and the second prizewinner will receive silver Nandi and Rs. 10,000.
The three best scripts will receive a bronze Nandi and Rs. 5,000 each, and 10 awards (bronze Nandi) are slotted for individuals in each category along with cash awards of Rs. 5,000 and a certificate. Besides, there are 3 jury awards in each category.
Each of the plays staged at the final competition will get Rs. 15,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 7,500 (for padyanatakam, full length and short social dramas, respectively). Please contact 323-3672 for further details.
