Kony is a sporting melodrama about a wayward but determined swimming coach Kshitish Sinha (Chatterjee) and his star disciple Kony (Bannerjee). Kony is the female street urchin being taught by Sinha. With the best of her coach's tutelage, Kony overcomes all adversities, including hostile sports administrators, and wins her race.
Adapted from a story by the noted sports journalist and novelist Moti Nandy, the film has both the realism and the political reference mandatory in Bengali cinema (club rivalry, Sinha becoming a speech writer for a politically ambitious industrialist). Kony's general defiance of both gender and class oppression keeps the sentiments within bounds.
Saroj De, who was associated with the famous Agragami collection, has directed this film. The cinematography is by Kamal Nayak, the lyrics are by the legendary Rabindranath Tagore and the music is by Chinmoy Chatterjee.
