The Lepakshi Handicrafts showroom at RTC X Roads is organising Sankranthi Bommalakoluvu, an exhibition of handicrafts, handlooms and Kondapalli toys, from 7th to 13th January. As the name suggests, it is an exhibition is dominated by toys, from Kondapalli and Ettikoppaka.
An exhibition with just about 10 stalls, the display contains some artistic artifacts that include Dashavatara sets, huts, palm trees, chariots with Lord Krishna and Arjuna, idols of Lord Hanuman showing Rama and Sita in his heart, elephant ambaris, brides in palanquins, bullock carts with sacks of paddy, and idols of Krishna with a cow. These toys are made from a special white wood called Puniki, and painted with environment-friendly vegetable dyes.
In addition to the toys, there are stalls displaying some dokra-cast art panels, pen stands, coaster sets and table mats. Cane baskets from Kashmir are worth a buy, ranging from Rs. 30 to Rs. 200. These baskets can be used to showcase fruits on a dining table, serve cakes and rotis, and store flowers.
