On the occasion of the 164th birth anniversary of saint Thyagaraja, as well as the 34th anniversary of the samithi, Vignana Samithi is organising its annual Thyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival from 24th to 30th January at the Anand Nagar Community Hall, Khairatabad.
On 30th January, Pantula Rama from Vizag will present a Carnatic vocal recital at 7:00pm. The musical support will be provided by M Srinivasa Narasimha Murthy on the violin, V V Ramana Murthy on the mridangam and P V Ramana Murthy on the ghatam.
Pantula Rama was born in a family with a lineage of music and her husband Mutnuri Srinivasa Narasimha Murthy is also a musician (a violinist).
Rama achieved top grade in Akashvani for violin, and an A-grade in vocal. She holds a doctorate (Ph D) in music from the Andhra University for research work and thesis on "A study of the shaping of an ideal musician through Saadhana", and MA and BA (music) from Andhra University. She had her initial training under her father, and advanced training under Sangeeta Kalasagara Guru Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao. Rama has presented various lec-dems like "Musical excellence of Syama Sastri", "Sadhana of Carnatic Music" and "Ragam Tanam Pallavi". She also conducted "Nowkacharitam", a musical opera of Thyagaraja.
Rama was awarded the Tambura Prize by Kalasagaram, Secunderabad. She won the first prize in Pallavi singing from the Madras Music Academy in 1993, and the Outstanding Lady Vocalist (Senior/Sub-Senior) Award from the Madras Music Academy in 2006.
Vignana Samithi, which is in its 34th year of existence, tries to propagate classical music by organising music concerts every month. It provides a platform for upcoming artistes by giving them opportunities to perform, and at the same time, gets senior artistes to perform and conduct workshops. Many senior artistes have performed for the organisation including Dr. Balamurali Krishna, the Malladi Brothers, the Hyderabad Brothers and Sankaranarayanan.
