A dramatic unravelling of a seemingly happy couple's inherent incompatibility. Made all the more enigmatic because it's raining outside. Plus, because there's an insomniac in the house.
After successfully making its debut last year, the Hyderabad Theatre Festival is now in its second outing. Titled the Hyderabad Theatre & Short-Film Festival, it has been scheduled for 19th to 25th July, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. A total of 7 plays and 6 short films will be screened during the week-long festival.
"Saari Raat", a 90-minute Hindi play written by Badal Sarkar and directed by Sunil Chandurkar, will be staged on the 4th day of the festival, the 22nd of July. It is a Bengali play written by the famous playwright Badal Sircar, and was translated into Hindi by Dr. Pratibha Agarwal. The play is about that 'one impossible night', and invokes certain basic values of life.
It is the story of a night and 3 characters - a husband, a wife and an old man. The play starts when the couple takes shelter in a broken down house on a rainy night. The owner of house is a mysterious insomniac old man, who lives there alone in his world of dreams.
As the night progresses, we get an insight into the couple's married life. Their seemingly happy relationship lacks mutual understanding. The husband is a practical man who considers his wife's philosophical and poetic outlook foolish and futile.
