Chitramayee State Art Gallery of Fine Arts is conducting an exhibition of Chelian's paintings. The exhibition will begin on 25th Nov '08 and will be open till 29th Nov '08. The timings of the exhibition are from 10am to 7pm.
Chelian believes in working on his drawings, experimenting with techniques and exploring different concepts, and he treats painting as a performing art. The rhythm of percussion is all he needs, to move his brush or fingers along the canvas creating images according to the beats. He advocates his own form of expressionistic art, which he terms 'emotionalism'.
He ranked 1st in his bachelors in Fine Arts, from the Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. He has conducted 22 1-man shows and nearly 30 group shows, all over India and abroad, and has participated in art camps and workshops. Many government museums and art galleries in India, and galleries abroad, own collections of his paintings and sculptures.
Some of his paintings are simply paints splashed on the canvas and later scraped into images. His works based on Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta and Sittanavasal cave paintings are more than mere reproductions of the ruined figures, where he glorifies figurines with broken limbs or corroded hands.
Vasal Illakiyamandram, Chennai, awarded him the title of 'Thoorigai Thooduvan' in 2005. He recieved the prestigious Camlin Art Foundation South Zone Award in the Professional Category in 2004. In 1999, he recieved the 'Outstanding Young Person' award by the Thanjavur Junior Chamber. The Thiruvalluvar Ilakiamandram, Chennai, awarded him the title of 'Kalai Gnayiru', and he received the 'Best Painting Artist Award 1998' by Bharath Culture, Chennai, in 1985. He alsi won the 1st prize at the Thanjavur Medical College Exhibition, Tanajavur, in 1984, and was awarded the first prize at the All India Art Exhibition of Chitrakala Nikethan, AP.
