In its 3 years of existence, this academy has had some illustrious disciples, and one of them is going to be the main attraction today, for reasons that aren't much to do with music. She's Laya, the 21-year-old upcoming heroine of movies like last week's Maa Aavidameedottu Mee Aavida Chala Manchidi and the earlier Manasunna Maaraju. She's going to be felicitated today by the Academy as the "Upcoming Outstanding Heroine of 2000".
The glamor part aside, there is music-related stuff happening here, too. This is a classical music teaching institute, and quite a few of its students are going to display their skills here today. The evening will start with a Carnatic vocal performance by a group of 4 kids, and will go on to a much larger performance of instrumental music, with 50 students, ranging from 6 to 20 in age, palying classical and film tunes on keyboards. After that, there will be a program titled Andhra Vaggeyakarula Animutyalu, vocal recitals by 12 students of the institute of songs by such saints as Annamacharya, Ramadas and Narayana Teertha.
Then the director of the institute, Prabhakar, will himself sing ancient Indian compositions of non-Andhra devotees like Surdas. The Chief Guest of the evening will be the Minister for Law, Chandrasekhar, and the event is being sponsored by the Development Credit Bank. Please contact Prabhakar at 766-4181 for further details.
