The good part about this is that the teacher is Pasumarthi Venugopala Krishna Sarma, the 70-year-old doyen of Yakshaganas, and that it is happening under the co-ordination of Alekhya, the director of the dance department of the Telugu University and a famous dansuese herself. The sad part is that the you can be a student only if you are from the Telugu University (or part of the faculty of the Central University).
Usha Parinayam is one of the old Yakshaganas and is typically performed for 3-4 days. Learning it takes much more time, and even the 21 days that this workshop is being held for will not really be enough to do a comprehensive job. So the important points are all being dealt with, and in a way that does not affect the continuity of the story. And in order to preserve the essence of the workshop for future batches, the teaching methodology and the audio are being documented by the department.
The valedictory function will be held on the 17th at the Telugu University auditorium at 11am. Please contact Alekhya at 324-0225 / 324-0226 / 323-4676 for further details.
