The Hyderabad Film Club, in collaboration with the Hyderabad Korean Residents Association, and the Korean Consulate (Mumbai), is organizing a Korean film festival from 26th to 28th December, at the Prasad Labs Preview Theatre. King And The CLowns will be screened by the Club at 3pm on 28th Decemeber.
The film is about 2 street clowns, Jang Seng and Gong Gil, living in the Chosun Dynasty, who come up with a play that mocks King Yon San. This hilarious and daring take on their ruler brings them money and laurels from the crowds, but also gathers the attention of the authorities.
They are arrested for staging the play that made fun of the king, and are threatened with execution. However they are given this one chance to perform for the king and make him laugh, in exchange for their lives. Performing in front of the King is a nerve wrecking experience and just when death seems imminent, Gong Gil pulls a surprise performance and cracks the straight face of the King. It pleases the King so much that he requests the clowns to stay in the palace to entertain him.
The film is 119 minutes long, and was released in 2005. It is directed by Lee Jun-ik, and edited by Kim Sang-beom and Kim Jae-beom, and the screenplay, written by Choi Seok-hwan, was adapted from the original by Kim Tae-wung. The cast includes Gam Wu-seong, Jeong Jin-yeong, Kang Seong-yeon, Lee Jun Ki and Kwon Won-tae. The music is composed by Lee Byung-woo, and Ji Gil-Wung is the cinematographer.
