The nail-biting finals between India and Syria in the Nehru Cup sure may be stressing you out, but then there's more coming. Local football has stars in the making, and you can get a glimpse of them at the Jay Rao Memorial Inter-School Football Tournament. The tournament will be held at the Valerian Grammar School ground, from 1st to 5th September. The matches will be played from 9:30am to 3:30pm.
The alumni of Valerian school are organising the championship in the memory of late Jay Rao, who was the coach of the football team at Valerian Grammar School for 29 years. A total of 16 teams are participating in the tournament, including HPS, Abhyasa School (Tupran), Shantiniketan Public School (Shamirpet), Kendriya Vidyalaya (Trimulgherry & Uppal), Valerian Grammar School, Sainikpuri High School, Gautam Model School (Marredpally), Indus Public School and Pragati Mahavidyalaya (Kukatpally).
The inauguration ceremony will be held on 1st September at the venue, with Jaya Praksh (counselor and ex-student of Valerian Grammar School) as the chief guest, at 9:30am. The finals will be on 5th September, after which the winners and the runners-up will be given trophies, by the chief guest Hanumanth Rao (MLA and ex-student of Valerian Grammar School).
Jay Rao has been the physical instructor and football coach for the Valerian School football team for 29 years. Some of his students have represented India in the national championships - E S Shyam represented the Indian Youth Team in 1990 at the Asian Youth Cup, and R Anand represented Junior India in tournaments in Dubai, Kerala and Hyderabad. He was responsible for the 6-year long success of the school football team at the Arch Decision School Meet.
