The small but cosy Hotel Hibiscus is run by the Nakasone family of Okinawa. The multicultural Nakasone family consists of: hardworking and light-hearted Mom; easygoing Dad; Grandma, who is a living proof of Okinawan women's strength; a pro boxer-to-be Kenji, whose father is African-American; kind and caring Sachiko, whose father is a white American; and 9-year-old Mieko, the main character of the story.

Hotel Hibiscus is based on the story by Miiko Nakasone.
