On the occasion of Vijay Jawan Mela, Shilparamam is presenting a Hindustani vocal recital by Leena Ravi, on 23rd October. Accompanying Leena are Yakub Ali on the harmonium and Umesh on the tabla. The recital starts with Laagire Naina Tumse in Raag Bhopali, followed by Gajra Banake Le Malanika in Yaman Kalyani.
Leena Ravi has done her P G in music from the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidhyalay, Miraj, and is a disciple of gurus like Vishwanath Waghmare and Seetadevi Rai. Tutored in the Kirana gharana of music, Leena is currently pursuing her Ph D on the topic of Influence Of Sants On Hindustani Classical Music. She has given concerts all over India during the last ten years.
Founder of Sur Taal Music Academy at Karkhana, Leena has over 52 students from age 3 to 75 years, learning Hindustani music from her every Saturday and Sunday. She also undertakes home tuitions in music during the rest of the week. In addition to vocals, she also teaches the harmonium.
In an effort to make Hindustani music learner-friendly, Leena teaches bhajans with special emphasis on ragas rather than training one raga over a period of month as in the traditional gurukul system. In this way, she creates an interest among her students who get eager with every learning class.
With immense support from her husband, Leena is aiming for greater heights. Her 7-year-old son Jaikrishna is also catching up with his mother, and has gained mastery over ten ragas of Hindustani music, which is commendable considering that each Hindustani raga lasts for about an hour unlike in Carnatic music where each raga lasts 10-15 minutes.
