This fortnight, artists from as far away as Kolkata and Varanasi are plugging their wares in town. Your next question should not be why, you meanie - it should be where.
Shrishti Art Gallery is organising a group exhibition of paintings and graphics from 18th October to 5th November. The exhibition has about 20 to 25 etchings and paintings on display. The artists participating are:
Atin Basak from Kolkata
S Pranam Singh from Varanasi
Sudhangshu Bandhopadhyay from Kolkata
Thushar Waghela from Chattisgarh
V Nagdas from Chattisgarh
Atin Basak is a BFA, Painting, from Kolkata, and a M A from M S University, Baroda. He has conducted many solo and group shows in Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Paris, UK, Germany and Egypt. The awards he has won are include 7th Biennial, Amadora, Portugal, 2000; International Print Biennial 2006, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal; AIFACS, New Delhi 1998; LKA, Orissa, 1998; Birla Academy of Art, Kolkata, 1996; Academy of Fine Art, Kolkata, 1994-95; and Bombay Art Society, 1996 and 1992.
S Pranam Singh studied at the Govt. College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and then at Kala Bhavan, Shanthiniketan. He has conducted solo shows and over 90 group shows in India at New Delhi, Muumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Bhopal, Jaipur, Imphal, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Shimla, Bhubneshwar, Goa, Kurukshetra and Varanasi. He has also conducted group shows at Dubai, Germany and London.
He is also a participant of national/state level art exhibitions since 1980, and has also been a participant of the 4th Asian International Art Exhibiiton,Seoul, South Korea, in 1989, and the 8th Asian International Art Exhibition at Fukuoka and Tagawa, Japan, in 1993.
The awards won by him, are Senior Fellowship in Painting, Dept. of Culture, Govt. of India; and Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata.
Sudhangshu Bandhopadhyay is a Diploma in Western Painting and Diploma in Sculpture, from the Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Kolkata, and has a degree in History of Art and Art Appreciation, from Calcutta University. He has participated in more than 50 group shows and also in several solo shows, both in India and abroad. He has won several awards.
Thushar Waghela is a Master of Arts in Philosophy. He has won several awards in exhibitions conducted at Bhopal, Nagpur and Indore, and even in countries like Bulgaria. He has conducted solo shows at Mumbai and Raipur, and even in countries like France, and has participated in many group shows.
V Nagdas holds a Diploma in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, Kerala, and a Post Diploma in Graphic Arts from the Viswa Bharati University, Shantiniketan. He has worked as a lecturer in printmaking, and as the Head of the Department of Graphics at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishvavidyalaya, Khairagarh. He has also been a visiting professor at the Govt. College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, Kerala; and the Bharatiyar College of Fine Arts, Pondicherry and Chandigarh. He has received a number of fellowships, scholarships and international awards.
He has held 6 solo exhibitions and 16 group exhibitions in different parts of the country. He has participated in several international workshops and camps organised by Lalit Kala Acadamies and the Birla Academy.
