Dastkar, one of the NGOs of Andhra Pradesh, is putting up an exhibition and sale of Dastkar textiles, suits and saris. Started in 1983, Dastkar has been working amongst the handloom weavers of the state all these years, teaching and training them with new and better ways of weaving. A part of their job is to keep updating the weavers with the latest and sophisticated techniques being used in the field of handlooms, to help them during manufacture, and, later, provide assistance for sales.
The exhibition at also has on display different kinds of hand-woven dress material, saris in khadi, kalamkari and Mangalgiri handloom products, veg dyes, Uppada saris and silver jewelry. The prices of the dress material range from Rs. 50 to Rs. 165, and those of the saris range from Rs. 280 to Rs. 765. All the other products are available at reasonable prices, too.
Unlike the common chemical yarn dyes used by textile manufacturers, Dastakar uses only veg dyes. Prepared from leaves, stems and tree branches, the veg dyes are completely natural. The dyes come mostly from Chennai. Cuddapah is another big supplier of veg yarn dyes and is famous for the dyes of color indigo.
Dastakar conducts such exhibitions and sales almost every year. For further details, please contact Supriya at 2772-1735 or 5531-1577.
