Sri Chandrasekharendra Sangeeta Educational Society is presenting a Carnatic vocal concert by Abhishek Raghuram, on 28th May, at Keyes Girls High School. He will be accompanied by Charulatha Ramanujam on the violin, M L N Raju on the mridangam and Shyam Kumar on the kanjeera.
Hailing from a musical family, Abhishek Raghuram is the grandson of Padmasri Palghat Raghu. Before taking up vocal music, Abhishek had his initial training in mridangam from his grandfather. Since 1994, Abhishek has been training in vocal music under P S Narayanaswamy. He is also a kanjira artiste, and has accompanied various artistes, besides having played with mridangam maestros that include Palghat Raghu, Dr. T K Murthy, and Umayalpuram Sivaraman.
Right from a young age, he has won several prizes in the competitions conducted by the Music Academy, Narada Gana Sabha, Mylapore Fine Arts, and Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha. At the age of 7, Raghuram was awarded a gold medal for the mridangam in the Mazhalai Medhai Contest (an all-India contest organized by the Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan). He also won the first prize in a pallavi singing competition organized by S Balachander Trust (Madras) in the year 1996.
He is a recipient of scholarship awarded by Sterling Holiday Resorts, Madras, for outstanding youngsters in music. He is also a recipient of Bharat Kalachar scholarship and Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram scholarship awarded to students in various arts. He has been giving vocal performances since 1994. He gave his first performance at the age of 9 under the auspices of Percussive Arts Centre, Bangalore.
Sri Chandrasekharendra Sangeeta Educational Society was founded in 2000, to promote Carnatic music to music lovers of all ages. It was established by S Chandrasekhar, a renowned vocalist, who has a diploma in Carnatic vocal music. He teaches about 50 students, both young and old.
Every Sunday, Chandrasekhar also teaches Annamacharya Keertanas from 3pm to 5pm, free of cost, to anyone eager to learn. The society organises various music concerts featuring local upcoming and established artistes, and renowned classical musicians from Chennai.
