Someone once said that the best way to start the weekend is a Carnatic vocal concert. Let's not get into the details of who and when. Here's how to do it this week.
To commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary vocalist Shyama Sastry, Sangeeta Ksheeragaram is organising a Carnatic vocal recital by Vizianagaram D Vardhani, on 20th April, at Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha in Chikkadpally. Vardhani will be singing a few kritis composed by late Shyama Sastry. She will be supported on the violin by Ramaraju Dinakar and on the mridangam by Burra Sriram.
Vardhani is a senior disciple of P V Seshayya Sastry in Vizianagaram, and learnt under him in the gurukula system for 16 years. She was her guru's most beloved disciple and was appreciated by him for her utter devotion. She has done M A in Music from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.
Vardhini is known for her sweet and clear rendition of the kritis. She has performed at various important cities like Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad. She has been conferred upon with many titles, such as Gaana Kokila and Madhura Kokila.
Sangeeta Ksheerasagaram was started by V Ananda Mohan, a disciple of Late Uppalapati Ankaiah, and he has been organizing classical music shows in memory of his guru. As a tribute to the legend, it promotes upcoming and established artists by inviting them to perform in these concerts.
