The Alliance Francaise of Hyderabad, in association with the French Embassy in India, is presenting an African music concert by Danyel Waro on March 24th at Durgam Cheruvu.
Poet/musician/activist Danyel Waro hails from the Reunion Island, located in the Indian Ocean, where he is a celebrated champion of the Creole culture and Maloya music. Maloya is the traditional music of the Reunion Island, and is often compared to the American blues. It is the rhythm on which the plantation workers have long been singing their joys and woes.
Although Maloya is part of the UNESCO's list of the 'Masterpieces of Intangible Culture Heritage of Humanity' now, performances by the Maloya groups were earlier banned by the French authorities for many years because of their autonomist beliefs and association links with the Communist Party of Reunion and other autonomous groups.
Danyel's songs border on poetry. He sings of love, death and politics, using a popular peasant vocabulary that his urban listeners have forgotten. He creates unexpected, beautiful and powerful imagery with his songs.
Entry is by invitation only, available at the Alliance Francaise office in West Marredpally. Please contact 2770-0736 for further details.
