Saptaswara Cultural Organization is organising the Dakshina Bharatiya Sangeeta Navaratrotsavamulu from 2nd to 10th November, at the Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika, the mini-hall of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha. The nine-day festival has two music concerts daily, featuring special kritis of the Music Trinity (Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastry), specially Dikshitar's Navagraha and Navavarna kritis.
Today, the last day of the event will see Dr S Uma Devi performing the Carnatic vocal recital. This will be the first recital of the evening, which will start at 6:15pm and will last till 7:15pm. Uma Devi has completed her M.A. and Phd. (music) from Pottisriramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad. She learnt music from well known musicians like Manchiraju Stayanarayana, Dr Nukala Chinna Stayanarayana and Padmabhushan Dr Sropada Pinakapani, impressed her masters and many with her knowledge and performances and gained their blessings. She is very determined and has focussed on the development of the carnatic music. Her interest lies in practising and serving the music. At present she is working as Head Of the Department of Music at Potti Srimaramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad.
After the vocal recitals, there will be a closing ceremony of this event. Dr C Narayana Reddy will be the chief guest, along with many musicians and guests.
The event is organised by Saptaswara, a cultural organization founded by K S R Balakrishna Sastry. He is a retired head-master who has also performed as an artiste on radio and TV, from 1952 to 2005. A disciple of Dr. M Balamurali Krishna, he has performed a number of times with him.
