Popuri Shankara Sarma is giving his 750th concert tonite. And the Bingi Malleshwari Memorial Trust has probably learnt its lesson about giving him titles he'll overcome with ease.
The Bingi Malleshwari Memorial Trust is organising a grand veena recital by Panchshata Veena Ratna Popuri Srinivasa Sarma, at the Kala Subbarao Kala Vedika in Chikkadpally, on 5th July. The recital will be supported by Prasad on the tabla and Sai Baba on the violin.
Born in a family of renowned musicians, Popuri Srinivasa Sarma learned veena from his father late Popuri Shankara Sarma. He has given 749 performances, and to commemorate his 750th concert, the Bingi Malleshwari Memorial Trust is felicitating him.
He also received the title of Panchashata Veena Ratna from the trust in the year 2003, for completing 500 performances. Srinivasa Sarma's wife Kiranmayee is a Carnatic vocalist and his daughters Yashasvi and Tejaswini, known as the Popuri Sisters, are also upcoming vocalists.
The Bingi Malleshwari Memorial Trust was established in 1989 by Bingi Narendra Goud, in memory of his late mother Bingi Malleshwari. Malleshwari was an Urdu teacher and a recipient of the Vidya Ratna Award from the Government Of Andhra Pradesh in 1980. The trust encourages upcoming and less-known music artistes through its concerts every 2 months and felicitates them. Every year, 300 poor school children are given notebooks, free of cost.
