On the occasion of the Vijay Jawan Mela shopping festival, Shilparamam is presenting a sitar recital by Smita Nagdev from Bhopal, on 25th October. Smita is a Hindustani classical musician and the daughter of Sachida Nagdev, a well-known painter.
Born in 1972 in Nagpur, Smita started learning sitar from Vasudev Rao Ashtewale, the renowned sitarist from the Ashtewale Gharana of Ujjain, under the Guru-Sishya tradition, since the age of four. Thereafter, from 1994, she started taking lessons from Jyoti Thakar from Pune. Currently, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, the renowned sarod player, has accepted her as his disciple.
Smita was awarded the CCRT Scholarship from the Government of India, during 1984-1991. She has done her Masters in music from Khairagarh Music University, Madhya Pradesh, and is a B-grade artiste of the AIR. She has performed at many venues and festivals in India, such as the Avtar Meher Festival in Ahmednagar, the Parampara Festival in Khajuraho, the Vindya Utsav in Shahdole (MP), the Sankalp Music Festival in Ahmedabad and Surat, the Sinhasth Mela in Ujjain, the Malhar Utsav in Jaipur and the Sangeeth Natak Academy Young Artist Festival in Jammu, and also in many countries abroad, such as China, Austria, France, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.
