On the occasion of the All-India Crafts Mela, Shilparamam is presenting a folk song recital by Jangi Reddy & group, on 1st January. With Sudhakar on the keyboards, Shiva Kumar on the dholak, Narendra on the dappu and Ramanadham on the pads, Jangi Reddy, along with Sunita, Renuka, Shivanagulu, Sikander, Krishnayya Goud and Vidyananda Chary, will sing Pedda Puli on Gandimysamma, Kodi Pandem on cock fights, Mandulodu Ori Mayalodu, Tummedulu Unnayi Rao, Attaru Sahebu and many more.
Born in Nagar Kurnool of Mahaboobnagar district, Jangi Reddy was tempted to learn folk music at a very young age, influenced by the culture of his village. As his mother Lakshmamma was a folk singer, he accompanied her to several concerts. But it was the poet Goreti Venkanna's writings that made him quit as electronics engineer and take up the folk art full time.
Reddy has given about 3,000 performances in Andhra Pradesh, and about 200 performances in the rest of India. This year he has also performed at Singapore and Malaysia, on the occasion of Ugadi celebrations.
In 1998, he established a folk institute called Janapada Kala Sravanthi in Jadcherla, and encourages rural youngsters to take up folk art, teaches them, and takes them along for performances. He has been conferred upon the titles of Janapada Kokila and Janapada Kala Ratna.
