Eminent pictorialist Bandi Rajan Babu has completed a golden jubilee of his photographic journey, and on this occasion, is exhibiting some of his best snaps at the ICCR Art Gallery in Ravindra Bharathi, from 21st to 24th March. The exhibited lot of photographs are all precious treasures of Rajan, which remind him of the 50 years of passion for and accomplishments in the art.
While a majority of the images are on rural woman, Araku vally in particular, there are some on fashion photography, too. The exhibition is also a tribute by his students to the legendary photographer for his dedication.
Rajan had an interest towards photography since childhood, in spite of the camera's rarity in those days. This interest made him study Diploma in Commercial Art with specialisation in photography, from the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad. Under the guidance of his guru Raja Triambak Raj Bahadur, a great pictorial photographer, he learnt the art to its fullest form.
Rajan started his career as a lecturer of photography from the same college (JNTU) that gave him a diploma. In 1970, when a faculty member in JNTU, he received his first international photography honours from AFIAP, Belgium. Amongst his other recognitions, he was honored as an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS), England, and with the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS), England, in 1987, for his thesis on Nude Photography. He is the only one to receive these fellowships from our state.
Rajan's invitation exhibitions organised in Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Toronto, New York and China were appreciated by all. His expertise has inspired many youngsters to take the art fulltime. After dabbling with various assignments, he finally started his pet project, Rajan's School of Photography, in 1978. The goal of the school is to nurture and cultivate the unique qualities of each student through an interesting curriculum, in an inspiring environment, under the leadership of Rajan Babu. Most of the alumni of Rajan's School of Photography are placed worldwide, doing excellent work in their specialized fields and promoting the art of photography.
