Down with fascism! This in a nutshell is Costa-Gavras's bold intention. The film Z, adapted from a novel by Vasslis Vassilikos, is based on the real-life murder of left Greek politician Gregory Lambrakis.
An investigator (Jean-Louis Trintignant) begins to dig up facts relating to the mysterious slaughtering of a leftist politician (Yves Montand). What follows is the unearthing of a murky plot involving the government and the military junta.
The otherwise dark undertones of the film are relieved by snippets of comedy, making Z bearable for the masses. The widow (Irene Papas) of the martyred politician feeds the emotional compulsions of the audience.
The film received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1970. The cast includes Jean-Louis Trintignant, Yves Montand, Irene Papas and Charles Denner.
