Saahiti is organising a workshop on Dr. Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna from 3rd Dec to 5th Dec at Saptaparini. The workshop will begin at 10am and will go on till 4pm.
This workshop is conducted by Prince Rama Varma. The workshop will consist of discussions about Dr. M Balamurali Krishna's compositions, with insights on why the Balamurali varnam is different from other varnams, and also on what makes his thillanas unique.
Prince Rama Varma, a direct descendant of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal and Raja Ravi Varma of the Royal family of Travancore is a gifted vocalist and a veena player. He is a disciple of Dr. M Balamurali Krishna.
Dr. Balamurali Krishna is a pioneer in the field of both vocal and instrumental music. A multi-faceted personality, he has been involved in music in its various forms - as a singer, a music director, an actor and even an instrumentalist, having attained mastery over the veena, the violin, the viola, the mridangam and the kanjira.
He has contributed more than 400 compositions to the field of Carnatic music. He is also credited with the conception of several new musical scales. Mahati, Sumukham, Trisakthi, Sarvashri, Omkari, Janasamodini, Manorama, Rohini, Vallabhi, Lavangi, Pratimadhyamavathi and Sushama are some of the ragas created by him. He is one of few singers who have perfect control in all 3 octaves.
Dr. Balamurali Krishna has been conferred with innumerable honors and awards, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Padmasri, and the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Silver Medal.
