The film tells an epic story of adventure in the desert of China's remote west during the Tang Dynasty. Commandant Li becomes a wanted criminal when he refuses to kill some captured civilians. Before they get that chance, they encounter a camel train escorting priceless Buddhist relics across the desert. Powerful local villain An tries to steal the relics for himself, forcing Li and Laixi to forget their rivalry and fight side by side to protect the precious cargo as it is transported to the emperor.
The film's score and soundtrack are composed by A R Rahman, and feature 16 tracks including the theme song in 3 languages, Chinese (Mandarin), English and Hindi. The movie features the theme song Mirage (Warriors In Peace), sung by Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai. Following the movie's release, the score and soundtrack were released in one album separately, under the title Between Heaven And Earth. Another notable aspect of the film is its cinematography, by Zhao Fei, which captures a wide range of landscapes across the Xinjiang province of China.
