Pomme is a nineteen year old French hairdresser whose life takes a fateful turn during a vacation at Normandy. Here, she becomes the lover of a middle-class literature-student Francois. The relationship sours when Francois takes her home to meet the parents, revealing their class-gap. With the differences in their background more pronounced than ever, the lovers part. Pomme takes it badly, and is soon a patient at a mental institution. Francois attempts a reconciliation, but their romance was foredoomed at the outset. The Lacemaker was the film that solidified the stardom of Isabelle Huppert; she was sowered with awards.
