Devotees who gathered at Sivam to celebrate the birthday celebrations of Sri Satya Sai Baba were treated to a melodious flute concert by the Sikkil Sisters. The very sight of these sisters with the flute and beginning to render those mesmeric harmonies delighted the onlookers, and as the music cascaded, the audience were swept into an entrancing spell. And then it did not matter what raga, what composition or tala they choose to play - what mattered was only the pure windy music. Everyone seemed to agree that only the music of the flute is capable of such a magical spell, and that too only when it is rendered in unison like the Sikkil Sisters can do it.
Thyagaraja's poetry seems to be the in thing with all musicians. The sisters commenced traditionally with Natakuranji Varnam in two level speeds. Muthu Swamy Dikshitar's "Vatapi Ganapatim Bhaje" in the melody of Hamsadhwani with a brief Ragalapana followed by some unique compositions of Tyagaraja like "Govardhana" in Hindola, "Bhavanata" in Mohana and "Inta Soukhyame" in Kapi were elaborated with flowing Swara Kalpanas. Violinist VV Srinivas, Percussionist Swamy and Ghatam artist Nemani Somayajulu accompanied the artists.
