The Commissioner Of Women Empowerment And Self-Employment, Government of Andhra Pradesh, together with the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, is organizing SARAS 2008, an exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts and handlooms, from 14th to 25th February, at the People's Plaza grounds, Necklace Road.
Being organised for the 9th year in succession, the exhibition has for the first time, participation from 11 other states of India in addition to Andhra Pradesh. A wide range of products is being displayed at the 290 stalls, including:
Handlooms, leather articles, marble statues, terracota, wood carving, Kondapalli and Ettikoppaka toys, and food stuff from Andhra Pradesh
Chanderi silks, bedsheets, adivasi paintings from Bastar, and batik prints from Madhya Pradesh
Lampshades, toys sculpted from coconut fible, and sea shells from Goa
Benaras silk, carpets, Morababad brass items from Uttar Pradesh
Kanchi saris, handlooms and food stuff from Tamil Nadu
Herbal powders and oils from Maharashtra
Bamboo crafts, polyster cloth flowers, coir products, sea shells, ayurvedic medicines, handlooms from Kerala
Embroidery and handicrafts from Gujarat
Soft silk saris from Karnataka
Glass craft, ornaments, teakwood wall clocks from Pondicherry
Glass craft and wood carving from Haryana
With the wares priced reasonably, the exhibition is expected to enhance the marketing linkages between these craftsmen and SHGs, thereby eliminating middlemen.
