The Hyderabad Film Club, in collaboration with the Federation Of Film Societies Of India, is presenting a South African Film Festival from 21st to 23rd February, at the Sarathi Studios in Ameerpet. A total of 6 films will be screened during the 3-day festival.
'Sarafina' is the inaugural film, to be screened at 5pm. The film is directed by Darrell James Roodt, and has Leleti Khumalo as Sarafina, Whoopi Goldberg as Mary Masembuko, Miriam Makeba as Angelina, and John Kani as the school principal.
Sarafina lives in Soweto, while her mother works as a maid in a white household in Johannesburg. Sarafina battles her feelings of abandonment with passionate hero-worship of both the imprisoned Nelson Mandela and her rebellious teacher, Mary Masembuka.
A school project spirals into a riot, and the police open fire on school children. Sarafina faces years of imprisonment for her role in the protest. Eventually, she is released and reunited with her mother. They find mutual respect for the different ways in which they both struggle against oppression.
Entry to the film festival is free. Please contact Bh S S Prakash Reddy of the Hyderabad Film Club at 2373-0841/93910-20243 for further details.
