On the occasion of the 63rd birth anniversary of late Rajiv Gandhi, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, together with the Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (NEDCAP) and the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, is organising the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas Half Marathon Run, on 20th August.
Since the year 2004, the birthday of the late Prime Minister is celebrated as Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas throughout the country. To commemorate this occasion, a National Marathon is being organised. During 2004 and 2005 the event was held at Delhi, and in 2006 it was held at Nagpur. This year, Hyderabad has been chosen for the national event.
The event will have a 21km open half-marathon for men, a 16km open half-marathon from women, a 10km open run for Under-18 boys and girls, and a 5km open run for Under-15 boys and girls. All the runs will start and culminate at the Jubilee Hall in Public Gardens. About 2,000 participants are expected to take part in this run, including 39 IPS probationers and athletes from other states of the country.
The prize money is worth over Rs. 5 lakhs. In the men's amd women's half marathon, cash prizes will be given for the top 25 positions, with the winner taking home Rs. 50,000 and the runners-up Rs. 30,000. In the under-18 and under-15 boys & girls, cash prizes upto the position of 10 will be given.
The prizes will be given by the chief guest Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju, Minister for New & Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar, and several other state and central ministers, MLAs and MPs will present for the occasion.
