Kalasagaram's 43rd Annual Festival of Music, Dance & Drama is on at the Keyes High School, from 27th November to 5th December. As part of the festival, Avasarala Kanyakumari from Chennai will be performing a solo violin recital, on 1st December.
Kanyakumari is an accompanist, soloist, teacher, innovator, composer and organizer. She has a B A in Carnatic music, and trained under Ivathuri Vijayeswara Rao of the AIR, M Chandrashekharan, and thereafter, M L Vasantha Kumari.
She has performed in the USA, Canada, France, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka, besides India. She was awarded with the title Dhanurveena Pravina by Sangeeta Kalanidhi late M S Subbulakshmi, when she completed 25 years as a violinist. Awards have flooded her career that has spanned over 3 decades - Kalaimamani, Ugadi Puraskar, Sunada Vani, Sangeeta Ratna and Sangeeta Kala Nipuna, to name a few.
She is known to have a dedication to teaching, that has made her a sought-after teacher. As for talented students, she teaches them without charging a fee.
Kalasagaram is a south-Indian cultural association, and has been organising Carnatic music concerts for more than 40 years now. The concerts are usually held in the Keyes High School campus, in the open-air theater. The singers are generally from outside Hyderabad, usually amateurs and upcoming artistes. Kalasagaram also occasionally stages south-Indian classical dances and Tamil plays.
The entry to this cultural festival is by daily donor passes of Rs. 100, Rs. 50 & Rs. 25 per head. Season passes are also available for Rs. 400, Rs. 300 & Rs. 200 per head.
