A Temporary Matter - English Play By Expressions: Events in Hyderabad

REVIEW FOR A TEMPORARY MATTER -...

After successfully making its debut last year, the Hyderabad Theatre Festival is now in its second outing. Titled the Hyderabad Theatre & Short-Film Festival, it has been scheduled for 19th to 25th July, at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium. A total of 7 plays and 6 short films will be screened during the week-long festival.

The penultimate day, the 24th of July, will feature a play "A Temporary Matter", written by Jhumpa Lahiri and directed by the Expressions Troupe. The 95-minute play is an adaptation of the short story "A Temporary Matter" from Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter Of Maladies". The story follows 5 evenings in the relationship of a young tragedy-struck couple through a game that they play across a series of power cuts.

Shukumar and Shoba are a young couple whose marriage is at an impasse. One day, they receive a notice from the power company explaining that their neighborhood will be without power one hour each evening, at 8, for the next 5 days.

They spend each of these nights in the dark, sharing secrets with each other. Each confession becomes more bold and reveals a larger flaw in their marriage, until their impending separation becomes clear.

Samahaara is a non-profit cultural society based in Hyderabad. For the last 6 years, it has been making efforts at taking theatre to the young minds of Hyderabad. The members include young working professionals and students.
